Happy Food Day

It is nearly Food Day again, which means getting back home for a bit, a bit of rest and some of Grandma’s cooking.

It sure would suck to be a turkey the past few days (and a couple days that have not yet come).

Downturn = upturn

Gas is now pretty cheap.  Saw on the news it was $1.99 in Milwaukee.  That is pretty cool for those people who have cars, trucks, motorcycles or scooters.  What baffled me was the report on how GM is now needing to ramp up SUV factories to keep up with some stimulated demand.  Every factory making the oversized  gas guzzlers are now on overtime.  They are planning to be on overtime until early 2009.

Are people REALLY that STUPID?  Unless people who are living off the beaten path or need a large vehicle for whatever reason are now jumping on some amazing deals still lingering from car makers to stimulate sales in a rough economy with rising oil prices, we have a very short memory.  Where were all those sales not even a month ago?  Nonexistent because gas was too expensive.  Where will they be in several months when gas starts breaking records again?  People looking to jump into a huge hulk for their transportation needs are going to be slapped in the face.  And they just won’t understand why or how.  Who wants to start a commune in the woods?

On the bright side, I saw Umphree’s McGee Friday night and they were awesome.  I can still feel the energy coursing through my veins.  Crammed into a taxi with 6 people on the way down and caught the bus on the way back.

Tom Morello

I would like to thank buddy Brian for cluing me in to the existence of The Nightwatchman (aka, Tom Morello, guitarist for Rage Against the Machine) and for inviting me to tag along to the show.  It was a pretty awesome set (and sounded very different from his studio CD’s), made even more awesome by the lady who gave me a free ticket as I reached the front of the line at the ticket booth.  Thanks lady! (and Tom for performing through a cold)

Happy people

I would like to direct everyone to an interesting article regarding professional happiness:

Where do America’s Happiest People Work?

Happy people are good, but look at the happiest profession: clergy.  And look at what percent of clergypeople are very happy: 67.2%.  The best we can do is a hair over 2/3??  Pathetic.  If you don’t like what you do, do something else.

That is easier said than done, but if the happiest profession still makes 32.8% of the people in that profession unhappy, something is wrong.

NO TABLES ON THE DESKS

Because of an incident at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, students are no longer allowed to put folding tables on top of their drafting tables.  But are given a folding table for personal use anyway.  Most of the studio rooms don’t have the floor area required to set up 15 drafting tables and 15 folding tables.  The stacked tables provided a very nice storage area for people’s things.

But we can’t do it any more.

So, why not build a shelf?
And that is exactly what I did.

The raw materials.

Almost there for the angle.

I know it looks a little crooked, but it isn’t.

Finished!

And with stuff.  (note the huge pieces of building holding the desk in place)

I will potentially have my 24 hour access taken away (as specified in the memo sent out earlier this year) and the campus police called (as evidenced by someone filing a police report against a student who had not taken down his table two days after the memo was sent out).

But really, it’s not a table…
